Settings and Props: Very realistic. Set the feeling of fear and urgency. Props are things that kids would be interested in and distracted by - pictures of kids being hurt, pile of kids shoes, grapes on table, bright colorful elements. They make Ofelia do what the Pale Man wants her to do. Elements make you realize the she is in danger.
Lighting: Dark, lets you know Ofelia is in a dungeon - no natural light. Set lighting is from the fire roaring in the background. Very shadowy and adjusts with situation. Darker in scarier parts and brighter in parts that are more important and need to be highlighted. Uses frontal, side, under, and top lighting to show urgency - such as the hour glass and the grapes and Ofelia reaches into the little door.
Costumes and Make-up: Very realistic. Fits scene very well, gives an eerie, gory fairy tale feeling. Only two characters in scene. Pale Man's costume and makeup gave a feeling of fear, especially for a child.
Sound: Mainly non-diegetic. Eerie music to set the scene - dark, scary dungeon. Music gets louder at important parts and increases with urgency - very dramatic. Diegetic - Ofelia speaks when reaching into the little door, Pale Man moans and fairies make noises for warnings.
Behavior of figures: Camera zooms in on important movements; Ofelia grabbing and eating grapes, shaking when inserting key into door and drawing the door with the chalk, pale man's fingers moving and him putting eyes in hands. Heavy breathing and facial expressions show fear and urgency. Camera pans the room to show what is going on in the room.
