Technology and social media have changed our culture in many, many ways. With the technology that we have today and all the new gadgets we have and how quickly we can access internet on our phones from where ever we are has made a huge impact. Whenever something happens in modern time we can know about it from jsut a few clicks of our fingers and we are never out of the loop. Social media especally because you can follow people or pages that give you live updates or live feeds of things that are going on in the world. Whether its from whats going on in congress to the newest kind of drama in school, you are always in the loop. You can surf the web and do everything you want or need to do from wherever you are. New research is being able to be done that will only keep benifiting human society.
Acorrding to http://www.medialit.org/reading-room/what-media-literacy-definitionand-more Media Literact is "the ability to access, anaylze, evaluate and create media in a variety of forms" So basically what this means to me is if you can create something for other people to read and benifit from or gain knowlege from then you are creating media and informing them on something that they didnt already know or that they might find interesting. People create media all the time, everywhere you look if something is said or doen then published in some kind of way that is media and it has been created. People think that media is just big time news or something that you see on the news channel but really it is everything around you and any person can create media.
In some ways I would consider myself media literate because I do keep up with things and put things out on social media for other people to see and to read. I use Twitter, Facebook, Instagram to express myself and to let people know what is going on in my life and if anything new is happening or what Im doing. I wouldnt say that what i personally have to say is more important that what the goverment or a famous person has to say and people might rather see what they have to say or what they are doing but that still doesnt mean im not media literate. I still do all the same things as those people and I still update my accounts so I would consider myself media literate.
I disagree with Postman because I feel like technology is advancing and we need to accept the fact things are getting bigger and better and that there is a new way of doing things that people didnt use to do. Just because technology is advancing doesnt mean its a bad thing and people arent going to "drown in a sea of irrelevance" and people wont fear that weve become a "captive culture". I think with society advancing people will start o not only warm up to the idea but they will also soon find that what they use to complain about is now helping them out more than ever and making everything they do that much easier.
